Having spent only one season at Barcelona after signing a 2-year long contract, Ilkay Gundogan is poised to part ways with the Catalans sooner than expected, bringing about an abrupt ending to a successful run with the renowned team.
This news comes after much speculation regarding the 33-year-old German’s future or lack thereof at Barcelona. The final nail in the coffin seems to be a meeting between the German international and Hansi Flick where it was made clear that Gundogan would not be a regular starter within the team.
With this disheartening information at his disposal, Gundogan decided to push forward with his exit and now according to Fabrizio Romano Barcelona too are open to letting go of the experienced midfielder, despite his impressive performance last season.
Many clubs are vying for the German
With his decision to leave the Blaugranes coming to light, many suitors have emerged, eager to get their hands on the veteran. He has attracted interest from Galatasaray over at the Süper Lig along with Al Nassr who are in talks with Barcelona according to reports from the Arab press.
The most interesting emergent however is none other than Manchester City who are the most likely prospect considering Gundogan’s history with the Premier League team and his constructive spell with them.
It is no secret that Pep Guardiola was saddened to see his team’s captain depart last year and would be happy to welcome him back.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the English giants have contacted the midfielder’s team and are keen on securing his signature. While Gundogan might not fit their ideal age profile, it is clear that Manchester City have struggled to replace the unique skill set he brought during his seven years with the club.
His loss would be felt at Barcelona who are already wrestling with their less-than-stellar midfield. Still, he would be sent off with warm regards and sweet sentiments. Until anything is set in stone, however, we will wait with bated breath to see where the wind takes him.
