With a lackluster midfield that has proved to be a sore point for FC Barcelona, one would assume that the club would direct its attention toward signing assets that would bolster said midfield during this summer transfer window.
Earlier today sources in line with this sentiment revealed that director Deco was deadset on signing a pivot despite Flick’s affliction with such a transfer.
However, now, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalans are instead prioritizing the attainment of a winger and a fullback with Joao Cancelo high on the list of prospects.
Considering the dire need for a pivot, this decision has sent out ripples of perplexity and has intensified the condemnation of Deco and Laporta.
Possible alternatives to a signing
The Blaugranes now face a quandary but there might be light at the end of the tunnel yet. Marc Casado the 20-year-old starlet who made his first-team debut against Valencia has proved to be a trustworthy fallback with immense talent as a defensive midfielder.
Coupled with the strengths of Marc Bernal who has also raised the bar for fellow youngsters, Barca could weather this storm.
Once Frenkie de Jong and Gavi are back from injury, they too will be options for a double pivot. For the Catalans, this is a strong enough pool of prospects for them not to bring in a new pivot.
Even so, it is important to note that many of these players are at the very beginning of their careers and it is perhaps time that Barcelona stop relying on their youngsters, especially for a weakness that has proved time and again to be the deciding factor between a win and a loss.
