Oriol Romeu joined Barca during a time of financial instability for a scant price last summer. He was not a priority transfer but rather a stopgap solution, with players like Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi being out of the team’s budget.
Tasked with filling the shoes of Sergio Busquets, he faced immense pressure and ultimately fell short of the lofty expectations, spending the majority of the campaign as a benchwarmer.
Romeu departs on loan
Now, as per Fabrizio Romano ex-La Masia player Oriol Romeu, who returned to Barcelona only a year ago, following a strong season at his former club Girona, has parted ways with the Blaugranes after an unsatisfying run with the Catalan giants.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the decision to loan out the 32-year-old veteran midfielder follows a saga of uncertainty regarding his future at the renowned club. This period included an era of distrust under Xavi and a subsequent resurgence of faith with the arrival of Hansi Flick.
Romeu had been linked with Girona since early January, and it seems Flick has finally decided to let the player go. Whether or not the Spaniard wishes to leave is unclear, considering he was reported to have rejected an offer from the Serie A team Napoli not long ago, showing a desire to continue with the Catalans.
With young talents such as Marc Bernal and Marc Casado at Flick’s disposal, Romeu’s estrangement from the starting eleven was made even more inherent so it is more than possible that Romeu himself gave up on his dream of shining at the legendary team. Many would consider it a wise decision for him to settle at a club where he could be promised progression in his currently stunted career.
After all, an opportunity to reunite with his former club is something that likely appealed to him and offers him an opportunity to turn his ailing fortunes around.
