The trail-blazing 22-year-old winger, Nico Williams has been rumored away from his club since before his triumph in the 2024 Euros, and his success at the international stage only added heat to the flames of a probable departure, namely to Barcelona. Ostensibly, however, those flames are starting to dwindle out the closer we get to the end of the transfer window.
With numerous reports emerging not long ago regarding a move to Barcelona for Williams, and the Blaugranes hard at work to secure his transfer, the world waited with bated breath for the seemingly inevitable confirmation. However, after several frustrating weeks passed, a collective sigh of disappointment rang out.
Barcelona still in the race for Nico Williams
That being said, it is still possible for the speedster to choose to hone his career at Barcelona despite his recent inclination to continue at his current team, Athletic Club.
The Catalans haven’t sunk to despair, with rekindled faith at the hands of reports from Sergi Capdevilla (h/t Reshad Rehman) surfacing, stating that the Spaniard has repudiated the notion of a move to the Ligue 1 team PSG, undeterred by their copious offers
This narrows the competition down to Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, the strongest contenders in the race to secure Williams, who is keen to continue his career in Spain. His interest in both clubs means Barcelona still have a hat in the ring.
Regardless of Barcelona’s zeal to equip their team with the talents of the youngster, it remains true that they cannot assuredly guarantee to him and his agent that they will be able to meet his vast price of €62 million, causing ever more delay and confusion in the long and winding saga of his uncertain future.
Reports indicate that the Blaugrana are waiting until the 12th of August, when training at Bilbao restarts, to discern the intentions of the highly sought-after prodigy. Until then, they are prioritizing the signing of fellow Spanish team player Dani Olmo.
